Chennai, July 7, 2025 — The Japan Coast Guard (JCG) ship Itsukushima, led by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, docked at Chennai Port, highlighting the strengthening maritime ties between India and Japan. This visit is part of its Global Ocean Voyage Training and emphasizes the strategic partnership between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and JCG in the Indo-Pacific region.

During its week-long stay, the ship will engage in various high-level activities, including bilateral meetings, joint training, and cultural exchanges. A key event will be the joint sea exercise named Jaa Mata on July 12, 2025. The visiting crew will participate in courtesy calls, reciprocal ship visits, and sporting events aimed at fostering mutual understanding and operational synergy.

In a symbolic gesture of cooperation, four ICG officers will join Itsukushima as Sea Riders for its onward journey to Singapore, continuing a tradition of officer-level exchanges between the two coast guards.

This engagement aligns with the 2006 Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan and supports regional maritime doctrines, including India’s SAGAR vision and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to maritime security and regional stability.
