The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is considering a four-year extension for the operating concession of the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal Private Limited (NSICT), which is set to expire on June 30, 2027. This proposal would align NSICT’s tenure with the adjacent Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal, operated by DP World, which runs until 2031. The consolidation of both terminals’ concession periods aims to facilitate a unified mega-terminal strategy at JNPA, India’s largest container port.
JNPA Chairman Gaurav Dayal has expressed support for the extension in principle, emphasizing the need to address the legal aspects involved. Approval of the extension would not only benefit the port but also provide a stable investment climate for future operators to enhance infrastructure and integrate DP World’s terminals into a cohesive mega-facility.
Initially developed in 1997 as India’s first private container terminal, NSICT has been crucial in boosting JNPA’s container handling capacity. With significant investments made by DP World in both NSICT and the adjacent terminal, the proposed extension is likely to be welcomed as a pathway for further capital growth.
The extension aligns with JNPA’s vision to create world-class mega-terminals capable of accommodating ultra-large vessels, positioning India as a competitive transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean region, as outlined in the Maritime India Vision 2030. Further discussions with DP World and legal advisers will determine the terms and feasibility of this proposal.
