The Bench of Justice Ma Abdul Hakim has ordered the arrest of the ship MSC Akita II, along with its equipment, valued at approximately ₹9,531 crore. This decision is pending a hearing scheduled for July 10 and is influenced by the operations of the Adani Group.

The MSC Akita II is owned by MSC Shipping Co and was previously linked to the sunken vessel MSC ELSA. The substantial claim of ₹9,531 crore is attributed to pollution damages, including oil spills and impacts on local fisheries, and the costs of necessary renovations.

The Kerala government’s environmental secretary has filed a lawsuit requesting ₹8,626.12 crore to compensate for environmental damage linked to MSC ELSA-3, specifically affecting coastal interests and public resources. Additionally, a claim of ₹378.48 crore seeks funding for measures to mitigate, minimize, or rectify environmental harm caused by the ship. The losses suffered by local fishermen alone amount to ₹526.51 crore.
