With just four days until the Vizhinjam International Seaport’s commissioning, the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) is set to transform the adjacent minor port into a commercial facility through a public-private partnership (PPP). Approval from the state government is anticipated next month, which will enable the upgrade to accommodate small and mid-sized ships.

The minor port’s existing 160-meter wharf will be refurbished, and redevelopment plans, pending Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s approval, aim to enhance its capacity. Preliminary tender processes are underway, with potential bids expected to include Adani, given their involvement in the international seaport.

Discussions with shipping companies are already in progress to introduce ferry services that would connect to Adani’s operations. In addition, the upgraded port will allow small container ships to dock, further integrating it into regional logistics.

Recently, the construction of an Indian Coast Guard berth was completed, costing about ₹25 crore. This development follows the long-delayed removal of the sunken tugboat MV Brahmekshara and aligns with the state government’s plan to build a new fishing harbour near the seaport, estimated at ₹271 crore.
