Kerala’s Kochi Water Metro has been requested to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for a similar initiative in Mumbai, as announced by Maharashtra Ports Minister Nitesh Rane. The DPR is expected by the end of the month, with plans to create a special purpose vehicle (SPV) in collaboration with the Union government, sharing the equity equally.
Rane highlighted that Mumbai, comprised of seven islands, has underutilized its waterways, which could significantly alleviate pressure on roads and suburban rail networks. The proposed water metro project aims to enhance urban transportation and stimulate tourism in India’s financial hub, featuring battery-powered ferries that will connect various areas within the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR).
Kochi, having launched India’s first water metro system in December 2023, provides a sustainable commuting option for its residents. Potential routes in the MMR include Narangi-Kharwadeswari and Gateway of India, alongside others connecting key locations.
The project also aims to improve last-mile connectivity, with development plans for access roads. Most proposed routes lack a passenger transport system, except for limited areas such as Mira Bhayander and Borivali. The system will accommodate tidal variations and may also promote tourism by linking various attractions.
