Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) is looking to expand its successful eco-friendly water transport system, known as the Kochi Water Metro, to 18 locations across India. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has appointed KMRL to conduct a feasibility study for implementing similar systems in various regions. This move highlights Kerala’s innovative strength and KMRL’s expertise in urban water transportation, setting a new standard comparable to metro rail systems.

To lead this expansion initiative, the KMRL Board of Directors has approved the formation of an advisory department. An internal committee has been appointed to oversee the initial work, with the option to bring in external experts if needed. The feasibility study will assess the potential for water metro services in areas with rivers, lakes, backwaters, and coastal regions. Possible locations include the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, and island routes in Andaman and Lakshadweep, among others.

Based on the study’s results, KMRL will develop Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the most suitable sites. This effort aims to harness water bodies for sustainable urban transport, revolutionizing mobility across the country. It also showcases Kerala’s leadership in sustainable development and modern transport innovations. Overall, this initiative reflects KMRL’s commitment to expanding eco-friendly water transport systems in India and fostering a more sustainable approach to urban mobility.
