AP Moller-Maersk recently held a name ceremony for its latest dual-fuel-methanol ship at Gateway Terminals India, one of the key container terminals in Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). This event signifies Maersk’s commitment to sourcing alternative fuels on a larger scale to support its next-generation fleet. The significance of India in Maersk’s strategy for sustainable maritime development was underscored.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Raksha Khadse, and other dignitaries. The presence of top officials from both JNPA and Maersk, including CEO Vincent Clerc and COO Keith Svendsen, highlighted India’s growing importance in global trade and green shipping initiatives. Gateway Terminals India, where the ceremony took place, plays a crucial role in facilitating sustainable maritime operations and supporting Maersk’s decarbonization goals.
The newly named Albert Maersk is part of Maersk’s dual-fuel fleet, with a capacity of 16,592 TEU, and is set for delivery in 2024-2025 from Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. This fleet is integral to Maersk’s goal of achieving net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Utilizing methanol as a fuel source, derived from organic resources, can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like bunker oil. India’s involvement in this event further solidifies its position in the global shipping industry and highlights its dedication to sustainable maritime practices. This milestone at Gateway Terminals India showcases the port’s capabilities and commitment to environmentally friendly operations.
