The Maharashtra government has introduced a new shipbuilding policy aimed at enhancing the state’s maritime infrastructure while promoting ship repair and recycling industries. The Maharashtra Shipbuilding, Ship Repair, and Ship Recycling Facility Development Policy 2025 was approved in a recent cabinet meeting, with a Government Resolution issued on Friday. This initiative is expected to attract investments, create jobs, and reduce dependence on foreign shipyards, aligning with the central government’s Maritime India Vision 2030.
Maharashtra’s advantageous coastal location positions it well for developing shipyards, servicing aging vessels, and facilitating organized ship recycling. While the existing Maharashtra Maritime Development Policy 2023 focuses on minor ports, this new policy specifically targets the shipbuilding ecosystem. It encourages private sector involvement through maritime shipyard clusters, standalone shipyards, and port-integrated projects to enhance efficiency and logistics.
Financial incentives include capital subsidies of 15% of project costs, support for skill development centers, and annual grants for employee training. The government aims to bolster cargo handling capacity and strengthen India’s maritime manufacturing base, positioning Maharashtra as a vital maritime hub on the western coast, fostering industrial growth and economic resilience.
