Maharashtra plans to bolster its maritime economy with the development of six large shipyard clusters along its coast, aiming for over Rs. 6,600 Crore in investments and creating 40,000 jobs by 2030. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is spearheading this initiative and has pinpointed six potential sites for the first cluster, including Nandgaon (Palghar), Dighi (Raigad), and Vijaydurg (Sindhudurg). A consultant will soon be appointed to conduct a techno-economic feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report.

The shipyard clusters will feature significant developments, including Nandgaon Shipyard, the largest at 2,666 acres; Dighi Shipyard, covering 2,550 acres; and Vijaydurg Shipyard at 1,371 acres. The consultant will be tasked with market analysis, engineering design, and environmental evaluations, ensuring that the plans adhere to global best practices and promote indigenous shipbuilding.

This initiative builds upon the state cabinet’s recently approved guidelines for shipbuilding, which include financial incentives and support for capital investments. Officials emphasized a gradual development approach, starting with the proposed shipyard cluster, with expansion contingent on industry feedback and investment responses.
