Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd is undertaking the construction of India’s largest floating dry dock at Nhava Island, near Mumbai, as part of a significant expansion initiative worth Rs 5,000 crore. The Rs 475 crore contract for this floating dry dock, which measures 180 meters in length, 44 meters in width, and 19.5 meters in height, has been awarded to Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd. The company plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore to enhance the 40-acre facility at Nhava, which will facilitate large ship orders.
The investment will include the development of a jetty, dredging, and other essential infrastructure to support the dry dock. Constructed in six modular blocks, the floating dry dock is being assembled at Shoft Shipyard’s site in Bharuch, Gujarat. Four of the blocks are already completed, with the remaining two expected to be finished by March. The completed blocks will be towed to the Nhava jetty for final assembly and launching.
Once operational by the end of the year, the facility will have the capacity to accommodate vessels weighing up to 12,800 tons and will support the construction and repair of large ships, including next-generation destroyers. Additionally, Mazagon Dock is also planning a new shipbuilding and repair facility on a 15-acre plot leased from the Mumbai Port Authority, which will further enhance its capabilities in naval construction and maintenance.
