Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), a transformative greenfield project aimed at enhancing air connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Western India. Operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) by Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between Adani Airports (74%) and CIDCO (26%), NMIA seeks to alleviate congestion at the existing Mumbai International Airport and position Navi Mumbai as a global aviation and logistics hub.
Situated in Ulwe, 37 km from South Mumbai, the airport covers 1,160 hectares and features architectural design inspired by India’s national flower, the lotus. The first phase includes a fully integrated terminal with a capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), set to expand to 90 MPPA. Notable amenities include 66 check-in counters, automated cargo handling, and facilities tailored for perishables and high-value goods.
As India’s first 5G-enabled smart airport, NMIA emphasizes contactless processes and real-time operations. Additionally, its eco-friendly initiatives encompass solar power generation and electric vehicle support. Strategically located near key ports, NMIA aims to significantly improve connectivity and logistics in the region, marking a pivotal development in India’s aviation landscape.
