Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced that the Centre of Excellence on Maritime Skills in Dibrugarh is expected to be completed by 2026. This initiative aims to equip local youth with essential maritime skills, enabling them to secure employment opportunities both in India and internationally. Currently, many youths from Assam and the Northeast face challenges in accessing these job prospects due to a lack of necessary skills.

Sonowal also highlighted that the shipbuilding center at Pandu would be operational by the end of this year, further boosting the maritime sector in the region. He emphasized that the development of new jetties and terminals will enhance the movement of vessels, facilitating cargo, cruise, and passenger transport. The introduction of foreign barges is also anticipated to improve connectivity in Assam’s waterways.

The Minister underscored the significant progress Assam has made under the NDA Government, particularly in addressing past issues of extremism and enhancing infrastructure. He noted that improved connectivity—through rail, road, waterways, and internet—is crucial for the region’s development, and the government is committed to ensuring that ongoing projects in the Northeast are completed with quality and timeliness by 2026.
