The serene Mahanadi River came alive today as Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the Mahanadi Boita Race 2025, kicking off a two-day event that celebrates Odisha’s rich maritime heritage and the historic Bali Yatra. Organized by the Department of Tourism in partnership with the Cuttack district administration, this vibrant event merges sport, culture, and heritage along the scenic route from Garadia Ghat to the Silver City Boat Club.
The race honors the ancient Sadhabas, or maritime traders, who once journeyed from the Mahanadi to distant lands such as Bali, Java, Sumatra, and Sri Lanka, fostering trade and cultural exchange. As a highlight of the Bali Yatra festivities, the Mahanadi Boita Race symbolizes Odisha’s long-standing relationship with the sea and its maritime legacy.
Following the flag-off, spectators were treated to an impressive Fly Boat Show, showcasing remarkable formations and speed. The excitement escalated with the commencement of the Boat Race Tournament, featuring competitive distances of 1,000, 500, and 200 meters, challenging the endurance and teamwork of participating teams. A total of 15 teams from various states, including 10 men’s and 5 women’s teams, participated, highlighting the spirit of sportsmanship and national unity.
In her address, Parida emphasized that the Mahanadi Boita Race is not just a competition but a tribute to the bravery and innovation of ancestors who navigated the seas, linking Odisha’s illustrious past to its vibrant future. Notable attendees included local MLAs, tourism officials, and law enforcement representatives, all celebrating this significant cultural event.
