Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the importance of skill development for India’s maritime sector during an event in Mumbai. He spoke to students at a ceremony organized by Vadhvan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) aimed at recognizing local youth participating in a comprehensive skilling initiative.
At the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between VPPL and the Maharashtra government’s Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (DVET). This collaboration will enable short-term skill courses at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) under the PM-SETU scheme, offering free training to students from 44 villages in the Vadhvan area.
Sonowal awarded certificates to the second batch of students completing the Custom Documentation course and provided confirmation letters to 11 students enrolled in the GP Rating Pre-Sea Training Course, which is being sponsored by VPPL at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh per candidate for a six-month residential program. He reiterated that skill development is crucial for creating job opportunities and aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a future-ready India.
Currently, 6,000 students are undergoing training across 162 batches in 28 different courses. To enhance accessibility, VPPL has introduced an AI chatbot for real-time registration and course information. The Vadhvan project, which involves a Rs 76,200 crore investment, aims to develop a major greenfield port in Palghar district, approved by the Union Cabinet in 2024.
