Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), previously known as Kolkata Port, has engaged IIT Kharagpur to devise a master plan for the development of the Hooghly Riverbank and Ghats, aiming to enhance tourism in West Bengal. Chairman Rathendra Raman mentioned plans for a dedicated river cruise terminal, akin to those in Varanasi and Assam, emphasizing the necessity for top-tier facilities supported by the Indian National Waterways Authority. A tender for this initiative will be issued soon.
The SMPK manages 357 hectares along the Kolkata riverbank and Howrah, with active development under the new master plan. A 1 km route tender has already been set up in Jorabagan, which will feature dynamic lighting on the Howrah Bridge. Future projects include Millennium Park 3 at Armenian Ghat and a new museum, along with the renovation of several ghats through corporate social responsibility efforts.
Raman highlighted West Bengal’s untapped tourism potential, stressing that the Hooghly River serves as a conduit for cruises linking Kolkata with historical cities. Indranil Sen, the State Minister of Tourism, confirmed state support for the initiative, noting the interest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in advancing the project in collaboration with SMPK.
