After over seven years since its announcement, survey work for dredging the Brahmaputra River has finally begun at Bogibeel. A team from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is now operating on a crucial 300-meter stretch identified for immediate dredging.

Sources indicate that actual dredging will commence shortly after the survey concludes. The chosen stretch at Bogibeel has increasingly hampered navigation, impacting ferry, cruise, and cargo services. The dredging is expected to significantly enhance navigability and improve transport efficiency in the region.

The initial survey for the entire Brahmaputra was officially launched on January 24, 2017, by then-Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal. This project was envisioned as a transformative initiative to enhance navigability, promote inland water transport, and strengthen connectivity across Assam and the Northeast.

Despite the long wait, the current survey marks a hopeful first step toward realizing this much-anticipated project. It has kindled public expectations for turning the Brahmaputra into a sustainable and efficient inland waterway corridor.
