The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has initiated a project to develop a sustainable urban transport system by utilizing existing navigable waterways. This innovative approach aims to provide safe, efficient, and environmentally-friendly alternatives to conventional modes of transport in 17 cities across 12 states in India. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has been tasked with conducting a feasibility study to implement the Water Metro model, which leverages India’s extensive network of rivers, canals, and water bodies.

The Urban Water Transport System will connect mainland areas, adjoining municipalities, panchayats, and islands through waterways, integrating with other modes of transport. This initiative is expected to promote tourism, regional economic growth, and seamless multimodal connectivity. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, IWAI is actively working on infrastructural interventions to develop waterways as a robust engine of growth.

In alignment with the Harit Nauka guidelines, IWAI has implemented green initiatives such as procuring electric catamarans for passenger ferries. Two catamarans are already in operation in Varanasi and Ayodhya, with plans to deploy six more in Mathura and Guwahati. Additionally, a hydrogen fuel cell powered vessel has successfully completed trials. The development of water metro projects will further strengthen the urban water transport system, extending IWAI’s proactive efforts in enhancing waterway infrastructure nationwide.
