PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNG Ports) has made history by appointing its first-ever female marine pilot, Ruth Philip. This milestone highlights the increasing opportunities for women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Philip, a graduate of PNG Ports’ Maritime Cadetship Program, has shown perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to her career over nearly a decade. Despite facing initial resistance and having to prove herself among male colleagues with more experience, Philip earned her Certificate of Competency and gained the trust and admiration of her peers.
Balancing her demanding career with motherhood, Philip had to navigate additional challenges. She took time off to have two children and returned to work shortly after their births, supported by her partner and mother. Her professional journey included obtaining various certifications and working with reputable shipping companies. PNG Ports CEO Neil Papenfus praised Philip’s appointment as a testament to the organization’s dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion in the maritime industry.
Philip’s appointment signifies a significant advancement in gender representation in PNG’s maritime sector, serving as an inspiration to aspiring female seafarers. The PNG Ports Maritime Cadetship Program, which has trained 23 cadets, including six now in full-time positions with the corporation, continues to focus on empowering women in maritime roles. As Philip takes on her new role, she demonstrates that determination and resilience can overcome even the toughest barriers, reflecting PNG Ports’ commitment to providing equal opportunities based on talent and ambition in the maritime industry.
