Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) has initiated an extensive modernization program aimed at reducing vessel turnaround times and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. A senior port official highlighted that the initiative combines technological advancements with infrastructure enhancements to enable quicker operations, cost reductions, and improved environmental conditions.

Key components of the plan include the addition of eight new mobile harbor cranes and the introduction of night navigation, which is anticipated to decrease average turnaround time from five days to four. Additionally, new floating cranes at Sagar Island will facilitate the discharge of dry bulk cargo from larger vessels in deeper waters, alleviating congestion in critical channels. The strategy also includes a projected 30-million-tonne increase in handling capacity to address limitations posed by the port’s riverine setting.

The environmental aspect is a significant focus, as reduced waiting times will lead to lower emissions from idling ships, enhancing local air quality. Upcoming projects, such as new lock gates and the Balagarh facility, are expected to streamline cargo operations and minimize pollution from road traffic.

Moreover, the strategy aims for economic inclusivity by boosting efficiency and attracting private investment, particularly through the Sagarmala Project’s Waterfront Warehouse initiative. This approach seeks to strengthen the logistics network, benefiting both large corporations and small businesses while supporting job security and promoting gender-neutral workforce growth.
