The Vizhinjam international seaport has achieved a significant milestone by handling over 800,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) from about 385 ships, nearly a year after commencing operations. According to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai and Adani Ports & SEZ’s Mundra Hafen, Vizhinjam ranks third nationally. In terms of freight volume changeover for this fiscal year, it leads among private ports in the eastern and southern regions.

Since its launch, Vizhinjam has transformed maritime operations in the south. Commercial activities started on December 3, 2024, after a five-month trial phase that began on July 12. The port significantly outperformed Chennai International Port and Cochin, although they remain competitive.

Insiders indicate that Cochin has also benefitted from Vizhinjam’s operations. The port recently received environmental approval to expand its capacity as part of its second and third phases. Adani Vizhinjam Ports Private Ltd. plans to invest around £10 billion in this expansion.

Once complete, the container handling capacity will increase from 1 million TEUs to 3 million TEUs, with potential growth to 4.5 million TEUs through automation. Vizhinjam currently leads in the South and East zones, securing a solid position nationally.
