Vizhinjam port is set to handle approximately 1.3 to 1.4 million containers by December 2026, as announced by Minister V N Vasavan during a recent press conference. Since its commercial operations began on December 3, 2024, the port has already processed over 1 million containers, exceeding its initial capacity of 1 million.
Vasavan highlighted that few ports globally have surpassed their designed capacity within their first operational year. The concession agreement had projected that the port would handle around 300,000 containers in its first year, but Vizhinjam has impressively managed more than three times that figure, with current statistics showing 1.012 million containers processed.
The port maintains a steady throughput of about 10,000 containers per month, showcasing its operational efficiency. This remarkable achievement positions Vizhinjam as a significant player in the maritime trade sector, marking a milestone in its early operational phase.
