Vizhinjam Port has emerged as the leading hub for container handling in South and East India, significantly narrowing the gap with major Western ports like Mumbai and Mundra. Its strategic location and operational efficiency are key factors driving its rapid growth.
The port’s advanced automated handling systems have allowed it to process an impressive volume of containers, even during its initial phase of development. Despite not being fully operational, Vizhinjam is already managing container volumes that surpass its designed capacity.
Currently, the port has a capacity of one million containers in its first phase, and it has consistently exceeded this figure. Recent reports indicate that it handled approximately 100,000 containers last month, with expectations for further increases as operations scale up.
As Vizhinjam continues to develop, it is poised to strengthen its position in the region’s container trade, reflecting a significant achievement that sets it apart from other ports.
