A need evaluation team has completed a mission in Guinea-Bissau to establish a maritime single window system at the Port of Bissau. This digital platform will facilitate information exchange among various stakeholders involved in shipping operations, streamlining procedures to save time and costs.

Starting January 1, 2024, all International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states must implement their own maritime single window systems to enhance shipping efficiency globally. The needs assessment took place from May 5-6, 2025, with support from IMO advisors, local authorities—including customs and border control—and other stakeholders. The mission concluded with a meeting to validate findings, which will inform future development of the maritime single window in Guinea-Bissau.

The report generated from this mission features analyses and recommendations based on IMO principles and outlines necessary IT tools to support the maritime single window. It includes a survey evaluating stakeholder awareness regarding the technical and operational requirements. This initiative is part of IMO’s integrated technical cooperation program in collaboration with Guinea-Bissau’s Maritime and Port Institute.

Additionally, last month, the IMO modified Marpol Annex VI to introduce a Net-Zero emissions framework for international shipping aimed at achieving zero emissions by 2050. The IMO urges Guinea-Bissau to embrace digital advancements in its shipping sector.
