As strong monsoon rains impact Vizhinjam International Seaport, various safety measures have been implemented to manage container and ship operations. High winds have made sea conditions rough, prompting officials to enforce best practices for piloting, anchoring, and mooring vessels. Shipping masters closely monitor weather conditions to ensure safe entry and departure for ships while adopting heightened precautions during operations.
To facilitate operations amid inclement weather, the port has cleared drainage systems, vegetation, and other obstructions, ensuring efficient rainwater flow. Unlike other ports, container loading and unloading at Vizhinjam continues unabated, even during heavy rain, as cranes are operated from a control room, allowing ships to maintain their schedules.
However, the ongoing expansion of the breakwater is facing delays due to rough sea conditions. High waves complicate the placement of stones required for construction, similar to challenges experienced during the monsoon months last year. The port, now one of the busiest in southern India, handles a high volume of container movements, with nearly one ship docking every other day, while prioritizing staff safety throughout the monsoon season.
