The construction of a new fishing port in Vizhinjam is set to begin in October 2025. The Hafeningenieur Department is preparing a 250-meter lakeside area as part of the second parcel of the project, budgeted at £45 crore. This initiative aligns with the Harbor project approved by the Kerala State Cabinet in March 2025, which has a total budget of £27 crore.

Package 1, awarded to Adani Vizhinjam Port PVT LTD (AVPPL), involves developing a 500-meter fishing structure and related infrastructure for £146 crore. A committee from the NGT reviewed the project last month and indicated that the port is expected to be completed by 2027.

Local fishing communities have been actively involved in approving the project layout. In July 2024, fishermen visited the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) in Pune to witness model tests of the design. Hafenminister VN Vasavan confirmed adherence to CWPRS recommendations for safety and functionality. A report presented in November 2024 suggested that enhancements to the design might raise costs.

Located between the existing fishing port and the international seaport, the new port will meet international standards and include facilities such as a jetty, administrative offices, and canteen. While the government suggested modernizing fishing boats, local fishermen preferred to continue using traditional vessels. The Harbor Engineering department has also proposed modernizing the existing port, with potential funding from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
