V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority has officially begun generating carbon credits from its renewable energy initiatives, marking a significant advancement in sustainable port management. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s guidance, VOC Port is evolving into a hub for green growth and maritime excellence. The port has registered five key renewable energy projects totaling 12.4 megawatts (MW), including rooftop solar and wind energy installations. Over the next decade, these projects are expected to generate around 19,483 carbon credits, potentially yielding nearly ₹50 crore in revenue.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ Maritime India Vision 2030, enhancing VOC Port’s role in establishing a domestic carbon trading system. The transition to green energy has also reduced the port’s dependency on conventional power sources, lowering energy costs and improving operational efficiency. This model serves as a replicable blueprint for ports globally, demonstrating that the path to ‘Net Zero’ can be economically viable.
