VOC Port Drives Sustainability Initiatives at India Maritime Week

V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin has positioned itself as a leader in green shipping corridors in India, showcasing its commitment to renewable energy and sustainable shipping practices. The port gained recognition during India Maritime Week 2025 held at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, where it hosted ‘Green Maritime Day’. This event was organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) in collaboration with partners RMI and NCOEGPS.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted India’s ambition to become a leading nation in green maritime initiatives. He expressed, “India is strategically poised to become a hub for green corridors, aiming to rank among the premier maritime nations by 2047.” Other prominent speakers included Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who discussed decarbonization efforts, and Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Naess, who delivered the keynote address.

Susan Kumar Purohit, head of the VOC Port Authority, emphasized the port’s initiatives, including its designation as a green hydrogen hub and various renewable energy projects. These efforts are projected to generate ₹1 lakh crore in sustainable investments, aligning with India’s broader goal of achieving ₹10 lakh crore in maritime growth. These strategies underscore VOC Port’s vital role in steering India toward a sustainable maritime future.
