The inaugural WISTA India ExCo Conference in Mumbai spotlighted sustainable shipping and diversity, marking the first WISTA International Mid-Term Meeting held in India. With WISTA International’s membership surpassing 6,000, the Executive Committee convened to discuss professional training for members and anticipate results from the IMO/WISTA Women in Maritime Survey. The agenda also included updates on regional reports and a review of equity fund strategies to bolster National WISTA Associations facing challenges.
Titled “Navigating Change: The Future of Sustainable Shipping,” the conference united industry leaders and maritime professionals to discuss advancing greener operations. WISTA International President Elpi Petraki emphasized the importance of collaboration and diversity in tackling industry challenges. She noted that the shipping sector’s inherent diversity fosters versatility, essential for overcoming obstacles and driving positive change.
Sanjam Gupta of WISTA India expressed pride in hosting the conference, highlighting India’s role as a sustainable shipping leader and recognizing women’s contributions to a greener industry. The ExCo’s engagement with the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy revealed efforts to encourage more women in seafaring, with a noted increase in female cadets, reflecting ongoing initiatives for a more inclusive maritime community.
