The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has launched a maritime technology centre in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, aimed at advancing research and development in smart systems, robotics, AI, and digital tools for the maritime industry. The launch coincided with the Saudi Maritime Logistics Congress and highlights ABS’s commitment to addressing operational and regulatory challenges in shipping.
This centre will foster collaboration among vessel operators, shipyards, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies on joint development projects. ABS plans to partner with Saudi universities to provide training opportunities for students pursuing maritime careers, enhancing local expertise in the field.
Yousef Al Dossary, general manager at Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority (TGA), noted that the centre underscores the Kingdom’s vision to promote innovation, safety, and the development of future maritime professionals. The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, focusing on building a skilled workforce in line with international maritime standards.
Additionally, earlier this year, ABS partnered with Saronic Technologies to enhance autonomous maritime technologies through a memorandum of understanding aimed at improving technical requirements for autonomous surface vessels and classification services.
