At Techonomy Impact, Sampriti Bhattacharyya, the founder and CEO of Navier, presented an innovative approach to revolutionizing maritime travel. Her team is developing the world’s first all-electric hydrofoil boat, which aims to significantly reduce emissions in the maritime industry. By employing aerospace engineering principles, the hydrofoil lifts above the water, minimizing drag and achieving an impressive 80% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional boats.
Bhattacharyya highlighted the maritime sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, noting it ranks as the sixth-largest polluter globally. Despite this, the industry often remains overlooked in discussions about climate change. She emphasized the need to rethink maritime design, suggesting that instead of merely electrifying existing boats, a complete redesign could lead to more efficient vessels that fly above the water rather than push through it.
The vision for Navier extends beyond individual boats to a broader model of sustainable coastal mobility. With a significant portion of the global population living in coastal cities, Bhattacharyya envisions waterways as efficient transit corridors, facilitating the movement of people and goods while reducing reliance on congested road networks. Her goal is to transform these waterways into zero-emission transportation hubs, promoting both economic viability and environmental sustainability.
