Eltronic FuelTech has joined forces with Aarhus University for a new project focused on developing a system to reduce ammonia emissions from dual-fuel vessels. The AMAZE project, initiated by Eltronic FuelTech in collaboration with Aarhus University’s Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering and Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering, is funded by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP). The project aims to create a solution to minimize ammonia emissions from dual-fuel vessels, with a scheduled start date in February 2025 and a completion target of the end of 2027.
The AMAZE project is set to tackle the challenges of using ammonia as a fuel in the shipping industry. The primary objective is to develop a full-scale prototype that can reduce ammonia emissions to below 25ppm from ships utilizing dual-fuel technology. Ammonia is considered a carbon-neutral fuel that does not produce CO2 emissions when burned, and it can be produced sustainably from renewable energy sources. This makes ammonia a promising alternative marine fuel that could significantly decrease the environmental impact of maritime transportation.
The collaboration between industry and academia in the AMAZE project involves integrating lab-scale systems with advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The anticipated outcome is a scalable and practical prototype that addresses the challenge of minimizing ammonia emissions from dual-fuel vessels. Eltronic FuelTech emphasized the importance of this innovation project, highlighting the potential for a significant impact on reducing the environmental footprint of the shipping industry.
