The Australian Border Force (ABF) recently conducted a week-long operation in Portland, focusing on curbing criminal activities along Victoria’s south-west coastline. This initiative aims to prevent organized crime groups from exploiting the Australian border for illegal activities, particularly drug trafficking involving substances like cocaine and methamphetamine.

During this operation, ABF Inspector Malcolm Hollis emphasized the importance of port security, which included vessel searches, surveillance, and community engagement. The operation also aimed to address the risk posed by trusted insiders who may facilitate large-scale drug imports via merchant ships and fishing fleets.

To counter these threats, the ABF maintained a strong presence in the area, employing aerial, land, and sea surveillance to detect potential criminal activities. Hollis highlighted the collaborative efforts with domestic and international partners, as well as industry stakeholders and local communities, to enhance operational effectiveness.

This week of action coincided with the 175th anniversary of Portland Customs House, reinforcing the ABF’s long-standing commitment to port security. Hollis noted that the agency is dedicated to ensuring that access to restricted areas is legitimate and free from collusion with organized crime.
