Australia has announced it will gift a Guardian-class Patrol Boat to the Maldives, enhancing bilateral defense cooperation and maritime security in the Indian Ocean. The vessel, set for delivery in 2026, will improve the Maldives’ capacity to monitor its extensive exclusive economic zone (EEZ), combat illegal activities, and conduct search and rescue operations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized Australia’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ maritime security, aligning with its National Defense Strategy. Alongside the patrol boat, Australia will provide a multi-beam echo sounder, an advanced hydrographic system that will aid the Maldives in mapping its ocean floor and promoting maritime safety.
The collaboration will include developing a tailored maintenance and sustainment package to ensure the patrol boat remains operational for years. This initiative is seen as a major step in strengthening the partnership between Australia and the Maldives, contributing to regional stability and security.
Maldives Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon welcomed the donation, viewing it as pivotal to enhancing the Maldives Coast Guard’s capabilities. Both nations share a mutual commitment to maritime safety, reinforcing their enduring partnership.
