The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that a loose wire caused a power failure on the cargo ship Dali, which crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March 2024, resulting in six fatalities. A hearing is underway in Washington to investigate this incident, which claimed the lives of six construction workers.
The NTSB staff has recommended regular inspections of high-voltage switchboards and proposed measures to enable ships to recover more swiftly from power losses. The Dali had previously experienced multiple power outages, including a blackout during maintenance and shortly before the collision.
In response to the crash, the NTSB is urging urgent safety assessments of 68 bridges across 19 states, including iconic structures like the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges. This review targets older bridges frequently used by large vessels that haven’t undergone vulnerability assessments.
The estimated cost for a replacement bridge has surged from $1.7 billion to $5.2 billion, with completion now pushed to late 2030 due to a new design and pier protection system. Additionally, the FBI is investigating the incident for possible criminal implications.
