Belgium has seized an oil tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, suspected of operating under false documents, according to Defence Minister Theo Francken. This action comes amid Western sanctions aimed at curbing Russia’s oil revenues following its invasion of Ukraine. The tanker, named Ethera, is on the EU’s sanctions list and is currently being escorted to Zeebrugge for seizure.
The Russian embassy in Belgium expressed concern over the seizure, stating it had not been informed of the reasons and was seeking information about any Russian nationals aboard. Moscow has previously labeled such actions as piracy, emphasizing the opaque ownership and environmental risks associated with shadow fleet vessels, which often lack proper insurance and safety certifications.
Francken underscored the importance of dismantling this fleet, stating, “Without his shadow fleet, Putin can’t wage war against innocent Ukrainians.” The Belgian federal prosecutor confirmed the presence of false documentation during the onboard inspection, prompting a criminal investigation.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha praised Belgium’s actions, urging other nations to take similar steps to combat Russia’s shadow fleet and promote peace through decisive measures.
