The BIMCO Documentary Committee has introduced a Methanol Annex to its Bunker Terms 2018, marking a significant step in the maritime industry’s shift toward alternative fuels and decarbonization. This annex incorporates new definitions to address evolving bunkering practices and emphasizes the importance of sustainability certification, which verifies the environmental credentials of fuels in line with regulations like FuelEU Maritime.
Developed through collaboration with industry stakeholders and experts, the Methanol Annex aligns with current practices while anticipating future regulatory changes. It allows parties to set greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity limits and methodologies for emissions calculations via an Election Sheet, ensuring adaptability to forthcoming regulations.
Given the toxic nature of methanol, the annex includes stringent safety measures. It mandates closed or remote sounding procedures during methanol bunkering to protect crew safety. These considerations reflect a comprehensive approach to managing the risks associated with using methanol as a marine fuel, ensuring that the industry can safely navigate its transition to more sustainable energy sources.
