Busan, South Korea, is set to transform its tourism sector with the introduction of two innovative transportation options: a maritime tourist taxi and amphibious buses. These services aim to significantly reduce travel time between the popular districts of Haeundae and Gwangalli from 30-40 minutes by land to just 10 minutes by sea. The Busan Metropolitan Government plans to commence trial operations in March 2025, with full implementation expected later that year. This initiative seeks to enhance the tourist experience by providing a faster and more efficient means of navigating between these iconic locations.
The maritime taxi service will utilize six to seven amphibious buses, each accommodating 40 to 50 passengers. By streamlining travel between Haeundae and Gwangalli, the service is anticipated to boost foot traffic and overall tourism in Busan. Additionally, the amphibious bus service, launching trials in December 2024, will offer a unique combination of land and water travel, allowing tourists to enjoy scenic views of the city’s famous landmarks, including Centum City and Gwangalli Beach.
Despite previous challenges in launching a maritime service, renewed support from local authorities has bolstered confidence in this project. With a strategic approach and strong government backing, Busan officials are optimistic about the commercial viability and potential tourism growth these services will bring. The successful implementation of these transportation options could inspire similar initiatives in other cities worldwide, positioning Busan as a leader in innovative tourism solutions.
