In 2024, the port of Antwerp Bruges and the shipping industry faced significant challenges, but also experienced growth in market share, container volumes, and roll-on-roll-off (Roro) cargo. Despite the difficult year, the port became a leading container port in Europe by tonnage, measured in TEU (20 foot equivalent units). Plans were set in motion to add an additional 10 million TEU capacity to accommodate future growth, with preparations underway to focus on greening and sustainability initiatives in 2025.

The exponential growth in 2024 was attributed to strong commitments from existing shipping lines, particularly MSC, and a robust automotive sector. Despite the global challenges faced by the maritime industry, the port saw a 3 percent increase in freight volume, showcasing resilience and adaptability. On the geopolitical front, discussions around trade agreements between India and Europe showed promise for increased trade relations and economic development. Positive developments, such as progress in negotiations and ceasefire agreements, indicated a potentially smoother path ahead for international trade.

The government’s progressive approach towards maritime growth included plans to develop mega ports and enhance existing infrastructure to support increased capacity and efficiency. Collaboration with Indian ports and industry players aimed to streamline processes and drive automation and IT integration. Initiatives like the port project in Duqm, Oman, with the Indian steel maker Jindal Group, demonstrated a commitment to sustainable development and strategic partnerships. Challenges of green transitions and operational efficiency remained at the forefront, with ongoing efforts to implement innovative solutions and address cost-sharing concerns among stakeholders.
