ClassNK has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the “Safety Berthing/Unberthing Assistance System” developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Additionally, it has awarded an Innovation Endorsement for the “Berthing and Unberthing Assistance System-Human Machine Interface.”
The ‘a-SAFE’ notation (BSS), which indicates advanced safety measures for ships, can now be applied to ClassNK-registered vessels equipped with this assistance system. ClassNK is actively engaged in demonstration projects and is committed to developing safety standards to support the implementation of automated and autonomous technologies in maritime operations.
To facilitate this, ClassNK released its “Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships (Version 2.0),” outlining requirements for each stage of design, installation, and maintenance related to these technologies. The safety review for the Safety Berthing/Unberthing Assistance System was conducted in accordance with these guidelines and the relevant construction rules, leading to the issuance of the AiP.
Moreover, ClassNK’s Innovation Endorsement for the Human Machine Interface further promotes the deployment of innovative equipment and software technologies through third-party certification, enhancing safety in maritime operations.
