ClassNK has awarded its “AUTO-Nav2(All)” notation to the Genbu, Japan’s first newly constructed autonomous liner container ship, part of The Nippon Foundation’s MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Program. This notation signifies that the ship is equipped with an autonomous navigation system approved by ClassNK, making it the first vessel to receive such recognition for medium- to long-distance coastal operations.

Built by Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation, the Genbu is managed by IKOUS Corporation and operated by Suzuyo Marine. ClassNK has also published its “Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships,” which detail the requirements for the design, development, installation, and maintenance of autonomous technologies, informed by various demonstration projects.

In Japan, the introduction of autonomous ships is expected to enhance connectivity to inhabited remote islands and support the domestic shipping industry, particularly as the seafaring workforce ages. This innovation aims to address logistical challenges while ensuring the continuity of maritime operations in the region.
