ClassNK has initiated a pilot test with ten Japanese companies for its drawing approval system, NK-PASS, and the ClassNK 3DViewer, both aligned with the upcoming 3D Model-Based Approval (3DMBA) set to launch in spring 2026. This innovative approach shifts the focus from traditional 2D drawings to 3D models, enhancing visualization and accuracy, while also expediting the identification of design changes and errors.
The new systems aim to facilitate the transition from conventional 2D approval processes to a modern workflow centered on 3D models. They will support the internationally recognized OCX (Open Class 3D Exchange) format, promoting digital transformation within the shipbuilding sector.
Participating companies in the pilot test include prominent names such as Oshima Shipbuilding, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, among others. In conjunction with the system launch, ClassNK plans to publish guidelines for 3DMBA, detailing requirements for 3D model submissions, standard operational procedures, and the management of OCX-based models.
Feedback from the pilot test will inform these guidelines, ensuring a smooth transition to 3DMBA and fostering its effective implementation in the industry.
