South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has partnered with US software firm Altair to enhance eco-friendly marine engines and explore AI applications in the maritime sector. This collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HHI’s Engine Research Institute, aims to improve marine engine technology by focusing on design efficiency and shortened development cycles.

The partnership will focus on creating simulation platforms for environmentally friendly engine designs, utilizing AI to boost performance, and implementing predictive maintenance and diagnostics. Sungchan An, Vice President of HHI’s Engine Research Institute, emphasized that this initiative builds on their existing relationship with Altair, which has previously contributed to the engineering of HHI’s HiMSEN engines. With Altair now part of Siemens, the development of next-generation engine technologies is expected to accelerate.

As the maritime industry faces increasing regulatory pressures and sustainability demands, digitalization has become crucial for enhancing operational efficiency and reducing emissions. Companies are investing in technologies like real-time vessel monitoring and AI-based route optimization to improve safety and cut costs. Initiatives like the green and digital shipping corridor established by the Ports of Singapore and Rotterdam exemplify efforts to integrate sustainable practices within the shipping value chain.
