Japan’s ClassNK has granted an approval in principle (AiP) for a bulk carrier concept by Oshima Shipbuilding, designed to accommodate various alternative fuels, including ammonia, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The vessel also features onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) capabilities.

This approval confirms the vessel’s technical feasibility from regulatory and safety standpoints, highlighting the industry’s commitment to adapting new builds in response to stricter emissions regulations.

The design was evaluated based on ClassNK’s updated Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels, which include an Alternative Fuel Ready Annex. This annex outlines the specifications for ships that are not initially built for alternative fuels but are prepared for future upgrades.
