ClassNK has unveiled the “Guidelines for Onboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems (Edition 2.0),” focusing on onboard CO2 capture systems (OCCS) utilizing membrane separation technology. These guidelines aim to facilitate the safe development, manufacturing, and installation of such systems, responding to the rising demand for CO2 capture from ship exhaust to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

The first edition, published in 2023, addressed OCCS using the amine absorption method. The newly released Edition 2.0 broadens the scope by incorporating requirements for the membrane separation method, which is more energy-efficient and eliminates the need for a continuous supply of amine solution.

Furthermore, ClassNK has restructured the fundamental functional requirements for OCCS, identifying commonalities across various capture methods. This has resulted in a comprehensive set of generic requirements applicable to all capture techniques.

The guidelines are accessible for download on ClassNK’s website, providing valuable resources for stakeholders in the maritime industry.
