ClassNK has published the latest editions of two important documents: “FAQs on the EU-ETS for Shipping (3rd Edition)” and “FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime (5th Edition).” These resources are designed to assist stakeholders in the maritime sector in understanding environmental regulations and formulating appropriate responses.
In 2023, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) was extended to cover the maritime industry, coming into effect on January 1, 2024. Meanwhile, the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which aims to facilitate the decarbonization of maritime fuels, was enacted in October 2023 and will be applicable starting January 1, 2025. Both regulations target vessels exceeding 5,000 gross tonnage that call at EU ports.
The newly released FAQs clarify that depending on the specific type of LNG-fueled engine, actual measured emissions may be lower than the default values, potentially leading to a decrease in calculated greenhouse gas emissions. The guidance outlines how to use measured methane slip emission factors instead of default values, in accordance with the European Commission’s reporting guidelines issued in October 2025.
ClassNK remains committed to supporting the shipping industry through its “ClassNK Transition Support Services.” The FAQs and additional materials related to methane slip applications can be accessed on the ClassNK website.
