Images have surfaced showing the aftermath of a containership incident at Brazil’s second-largest port, Itajaí, where the vessel Vincente Pinzon broke free from its moorings. The ship, which was docked on August 27, lost its bow lines due to strong river currents and subsequently swung into the Itajaí-Açu river channel. Port officials reported that emergency teams and tugs swiftly intervened, securing the 254-meter (833-foot) ship without injuries or significant damage.

The Vincente Pinzon, built in 2014 and previously operated by Hamburg Sud, has a capacity of 4,848 TEU and serves coastal routes for Alianca Navegacao. This incident marks the second occurrence of a containership breaking loose in recent months, with a similar event reported in December 2024, raising safety concerns as the ship approached the ferry terminal before being controlled.

The Port of Itajal is vital for Brazil’s southern industrial region and is set for modernization. Planned upgrades include infrastructure enhancements to accommodate larger vessels and dredging to increase the channel’s draft to 16 meters (52.5 feet), as part of a broader initiative to improve port efficiency ahead of concession auctions in early 2026.
