The captain of the MSC Jubilee IX, Oreh Danylin, faces a $10,000 arrest warrant issued by King County district court following his absence at a hearing on August 27. The warrant stems from Danylin’s detention on August 20 in Seattle for operating the ship while intoxicated. He was charged after a Puget Sound pilot noted signs of impairment during the vessel’s maneuver from Everett Anchorage to Terminal 5.

U.S. Coast Guard reports indicated that Danylin exhibited poor performance during sobriety tests, prompting officials to halt the assessments for safety. Subsequent breathalyzer tests revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24 percent, well above legal limits for commercial Mariners. Danylin, 48 and a Ukrainian citizen, attributed the alcohol smell to mouthwash, claiming he hadn’t drunk for two months. Despite his defense, he received a civil penalty of $1,000.

During an August 25 court appearance, Danylin, needing an interpreter, was ordered to remain in Washington and prohibited from consuming alcohol. However, after failing to attend the hearing on August 27, the arrest warrant was issued. The MSC Jubilee IX, a Liberian-registered vessel, is notable for its significant size, capable of carrying 8,800 TEU containers. It was recently located near Prince Rupert, Canada.
