A Maltese-flagged containership, the Safeen Prestige, was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, prompting crew members to abandon ship. The incident occurred around 1109 GMT, approximately two nautical miles north of Oman, as reported by the British maritime risk firm Vanguard. Initial assessments indicate that the projectile hit just above the waterline, leading to a fire in the engine room. The damage’s extent and the vessel’s condition remain uncertain.

This incident follows a warning from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which had reported a similar occurrence involving a container ship in the vicinity. Fortunately, no environmental impact has been recorded as authorities investigate the incident. The Safeen Prestige, owned by Safeen Feeders and part of AD Ports Group, operates a fleet with most vessels situated outside the immediate area of conflict.

The attack reflects an increase in maritime security incidents in the region. The UKMTO’s summary noted a volatile environment, with multiple recent attacks, including one involving a bulk carrier near Fujairah. Analysts have raised the maritime threat level to critical following military confrontations involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, emphasizing the risks commercial shipping faces in this vital energy transit point. Shipping companies are reassessing their operations to mitigate risks associated with the escalating threats.
