Danish Shipping has initiated a program aimed at enhancing maritime skills and creating opportunities for talented African cadets. This initiative builds on a long-standing collaboration between Danish shipping firms and African maritime institutions, particularly in West Africa. The African Maritime Training Initiative seeks to provide world-class training and sea experience by partnering with leading Danish shipowners, including Maersk, Norden, Hafnia, Torm, Unifeeder, and Navigator Gas, all coordinated by Danish Shipping.
A strong foundation for the initiative has been established through Norden’s involvement in West Africa, particularly its support for the Regional Maritime Academy in Abidjan. Since 2019, 18 students from Côte d’Ivoire and Gabon have been sponsored, with the first cadets expected to complete their sea time in 2024, aiming for officer positions in the Synergy fleet. In 2025, an additional 18 cadets from Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Guinea will be sponsored, with six new trainees anticipated to join Norden vessels.
Hafnia has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Regional Maritime University in Ghana, committing to recruit at least 16 cadets annually from RMU. So far, 77 cadets have participated in their training with Hafnia, aiming to advance within the fleet. Additionally, Maersk’s training program with the Kenya Ports Authority has successfully provided maritime training for Kenyan students, further showcasing the potential for industry-academy collaboration. Six African cadets are expected to join Navigator Gas vessels in the upcoming year, contingent upon meeting entry requirements.
