DBI, the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology, has joined the Maritime Battery Forum, contributing over a century of expertise in applied research, testing, and emergency preparedness to enhance battery safety at sea. Since 2017, DBI has focused on maritime battery initiatives, particularly through its Blue Battery project, which investigates incidents, identifies safety gaps, and formulates actionable recommendations.

The institute employs a combination of experimental fire testing and validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to convert complex data into practical guidance for ship designers, operators, and emergency responders. As a member of the Maritime Battery Forum, DBI aims to collaborate with shipowners, technology providers, classification societies, and regulatory bodies to create evidence-based standards, training programs, and incident response protocols that keep pace with the increasing use of batteries in ferries and offshore fleets.

DBI emphasizes the importance of validating simulation models through real-world testing to ensure that safety recommendations accurately reflect the behavior of thermal runaway, smoke, and heat spread. Anders Kristensen from DBI expressed the organization’s commitment to challenging existing assumptions and providing technical insights to facilitate a safe transition to battery-powered maritime solutions.
